Air of Authority - A History of RAF Organisation
Prior to 1938 the RAF operated a number of support units tasked with the storage, servicing and repair of equipment but as the RAF expanded, the number needed increased and it was decided to adopt an standard nomenclature for these units, the term selected being 'Maintenance Unit' (MU). Some existing units were redesignated whilst new ones would be formed in the forthcoming years. Each MU was generally tasked with a specific role but a few were often responsible for a variety of tasks.
No 1 Maintenance Unit
This was formed on 9 April 1938 by redesignating No 1 Equipment Depot at RAF Kidbrooke as a Repair Depot. It was transferred to Maintenance Command on 1 August 1938, to No 40 (Maintenance) Group on 6 March 1939 and then to No 43 Group on 13 May 1940, although 40 Group retained an Equipment Depository as a 'Lodger' unit, known as 'M; Maintenance Unit'. It disbanded on 15 February 1947.

This was formed on 1 June 1938 within No 24 Group at Fauld as an Explosives Storage unit, later renamed Ammunition Storage Depot. It was transferred to No 42 Group on 19 June 1939, It operated a Maintenance Sub-Unit at Pulham until 12 August 1940 when it became self-accounting and was renamed No 53 Maintenance Unit.
On 27 November 1944 at 11:11am an explosion in the underground storage site at Hanbury created a crater 100 ft deep 250 yds (750 ft) across when 3.500-4,000 tons of bombs and ammunition detonated. As well as the crater and destruction of a nearby farm, a reservoir was destroyed and the 450,000 cubic metres of water released caused flooding which added further to the damage. The explosion was the largest explosion in the UK and one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in the world. The numbers killed is unknown but thought to be around 70. It was renamed an Ammunition Supply Depot on 1 December 1963 and disbanded on 14 June 1966.
The cause is thought to have been due to a worker using a brass chisel to remove a detonator in contravention of regulations.
