Allisstone spent much of his time as a junior officer on deployment with operational squadrons overseas.  Following two years in Aden he specialized in explosives (inc nuclear weapons) and in fuels, later teaching these subjects to Cranwell cadets where he had returned as a College flight commander.  After a spell on the Air Staff in London and attending the RAF Staff College at Bracknell, Allisstone went to Germany.  He returned to complete the joint service staff course at Latimer before taking up an MOD Central Staff planning appointment.  In 1975 he became Head of the RAF fuels organization world-wide and next commanded a major RAF storage depot.  He then returned to the MOD where he became Chief Staff Officer (Logistics) to VCDS.  Selected for RCDS in 1982, thereafter he directed supply systems, management, and finally policy and logistics planning, whilst frequently acting as Director General of RAF Supply.
