Construction of an airfield at Eastburn near
Driffield began in December 1916 but it was October 1917 before No 2 School
of Aerial Fighting moved into the recently opened airfield. In May 1918 No
2 was replaced by No 3 School of Aerial Fighting and Gunnery, but almost
immediately moved to Norfolk. In it place came No 3 And No 27 Training
Squadrons, which were formed into No 21 Training Depot Station, which
specialised in training pilots on the SE5A. No 21 TDS was renamed No 21
Training School in July 1919 but closed in February 1920, after which the
station was placed on Care and Maintenance until it too was closed and
disposed of in 1925.
With the need for more airfields in Yorkshire
on which to base bombers able to reach Germany, the WW1 site at Driffield
was surveyed and selected for development, work beginning in 1935. The
first squadrons arrived at RAF Driffield in August 1936, these being Nos 58
and 215. Originally controlled by No 3 Group, the station was transferred
to No 4 Group in June 1937.
The two units in residence at the start of
WW2 were Nos 77 and 102 Squadrons, operating Whitleys and they continued to
operate against targets in Germany until August 1940. On the 15th of that
month the Luftwaffe attacked the airfield causing such severe damage that
the two squadrons moved out later that month for repairs to be carried out.
When it reopened, it was under the control of
No 13 Group, Fighter Command and various fighter squadrons operated from
Driffield, including Nos 1, 213 and 485 RNZAF, until 1 April 1941 when it
reverted to No 4 Group, Bomber Command. No 104 Squadron formed here on the
same day and No 405 (RCAF) Squadron also formed here at the end of the month
but moved to Pocklington in June.
The bulk of No 104 moved to the Middle East
in October 1941 and in February 1942, the element at Driffield was
renumbered No 158 Squadron. No 158 moved to East Moor and the station
closed in June 1942, in order for runway construction to take place.
However in October, No 466 (RAAF) Squadron formed and in November, No 196,
but these both moved out to Leconfield in December, allowing reconstruction
to continue.
On 6 June 1943, Driffield became No 43 Base
HQ, with sub-stations at Leconfield and Lissett, although work was still in
progress, No 4 Group Battle School was also here at this period. It was
June 1944 before an operational squadron returned to Driffield, when No 466
returned and in August, No 462 (RAAF) Squadron formed here, both units being
equipped with the Handley Page Halifax. No 462 moved to Foulsham in
December 1944, leaving No 466 as the sole operational unit at the station
until the end of the war. No 426 (RCAF) Squadron arrived in May 1945 but
left again in June and when No 466 left in September, Driffield ceased to be
an operational station.
The station returned to Care and Maintenance
until September 1946, when No 10 Air Navigation School moved in, equipped
with Wellingtons and Ansons. In 1948 No 10 ANS was replaced by No 204
Advanced Flying School with Mosquitoes, who stayed for just over a year. On
1 March 1948 No 226 Operational Conversion Unit arrived from Cottesmore,
with its Meteors and Vampire, its role now being to covert pilots trained on
piston engined trainers to jets. The OCU was redesignated No 203 AFS on 1
September 1949 and finally No 8 Flying Training School on 1 June 1954,
finally moving out to Swinderby on 22 August 1955.
From 1955 to 1957, the station was home to
two fighter squadrons, No 219 (September 1955 - July 1957) and No 33
(October 1955 - June 1957). In October 1957, the Fighter Weapons School
arrived from Leconfield, leaving in March 1958, after which the station was
converted for a new role entirely. It was now to become an Intermediate
Range Ballistic Missile site and on 1 January 1959, No 98 Squadron took up
residence, remaining until 1963, when the Thor missiles were returned to the
USA.
The station reverted to C&M, but from
September 1967 to February 1968, Hawker Siddeley used the airfield for
development flying of the Buccaneer. Eventually on 1 April 1977, the
station was handed over to the Army and became part of the Army School of
Mechanical Transport, with the runways being removed and a cross-country
driving course being constructed in it place. The station was also used as
a HQ and accommodation unit for the radar station at Staxton Wold, but this
ended on 28 June 1996. Today there is a compound containing the HQ of the
local Army Cadet Force, an Air Training Corps squadron and some of the
hangers are used as grain stores for the European Union. |
