After bombing the target, they turned for home and Mackay was hit by a shell splinter, necessitating his observer to take control of the aircraft, which he successfully brought down on the German side of the lines. They were both made prisoners, but Mackay died of his wounds the following day. He is buried in Joeuf Communal Cemetery. |
