Educated at Cheltenham College, he entered the RAF College at Cranwell in 1938, attained the rank of Flight Cadet Corporal, graduating shortly after the outbreak of WW2.

Taking over command of No 39 Squadron at Luqa in Malta, he became responsible for proving the 'eyes' to NATO in Southern Europe.

Retired at his own request.  In 1979 he became a Director of Acatos and Hutcheson.

Citation for the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross

"WADE, Ruthven Lowry, A/S/L (33524, Royal Air Force) - No.153 Squadron

Since joining this squadron Squadron, Leader Wade has commanded a flight with outstanding success.  He has been continuously employed on operations for three years both in England and in the Mediterranean theatres of operations.  While on operations in England he destroyed an enemy aircraft and damaged others.  He has always evinced great keenness for operational flying and his coolness, courage and devotion to duty have been remarkable at all times."
