He attended School at Repton before going to University College, Cardiff.  He retired on account of ill health and died at Halton (RAF Hospital?) as a result of this.

Citation for the award of the Military Cross

"Lt. (T./Capt.) John Lyne Vachell, R.F.A.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion duty. He did excellent work on many occasions, continually locating and engaging successfully enemy heavy batteries."
