He was born in Walthamstow, East London, and missed a lot of his schooling due being judged sickly and left at 14 to work as a runner for the London Stock Exchange.
With the outbreak of war, he volunteered for the RAF and was sent to India, where he was commissioned in 1943. He returned to the UK in October 1945 and in 1947 was accepted for an extended service commission in the Secretarial Branch and a year later to a permanent commission.
In 1953 he transferred to the Equipment Branch and set about taking the appropriate examinations.
