Graduating from the RAF College which he represented at Swimming and Rowing and where he attained the rank of Senior Flight Cadet, he was posted to No 16 Squadron at Laarbruch flying Canberra B(I)8’s. Graduating as a QFI, he instructors on Vampires, initially at RAF Swinderby and later RAF Linton on Ouse. He remained on instructional duties for his next posting which an exchange posting with the RAAF in Western Australia. His return to the UK also brought a return to Linton when he was appointed Group Flight Safety Officer.
Graduation from the RAF Staff College was followed by conversion to helicopters at RAF Tern Hill and his appointment as CO of No 103 Squadron in Singapore flying the Wessex. He was now well and truly in the support helicopter field with his appointment as OC – Flying at Odiham and later Station Commander at Shawbury. In between these postings he attended the Joint Services Staff College in Canberra, Australia and carried out staff duties at HQ Strike Command and SHAPE. After Shawbury he returned to SHAPE before his final appointment at RAF Newton as AOC, Air Cadets.
Following
retirement from the RAF he maintained his connection with both the RAF and the
ATC as the Regional Commandant for the South West in the rank of Group Captain
(‘J’ Class reserve).
