On completion of his apprenticeship at Cranwell, he was awarded a scholarship to the RAF College, which he represented at Fencing and was awarded the Abdy Gerrard Fellows Memorial Prize.  Joined the RAF as R Costa, changed name to Coats in 1943, (see below).  From 1958 until 1965 he worked for ICI/ICT?

“NOTICE is hereby given that ROWLAND COSTA, of " Todslake " Silsoe in the county of Bedford a Group Captain in His Majesty's Royal Air Force and a natural born British subject resident in the United Kingdom on the date of the coming into force of Regulation 20 of the Defence (General) Regulations 1939 intends after the expiration of 21 days from the publication of this notice to assume the surname of Coats.—Dated the 7th day of October, 1943.”
