He had been the youngest recipient of the VC when he was earned his award in 1940 but never returned to operational flying.  Suffering from deteriorating health he was eventually discharged on 10 December 1942, and died from tuberculosis in Markfield Sanatorium, Leicester.  He is buried in Birstall (St James) Churchyard.
