He had been serving in the Far East when he was captured by the Japanese.  He died in Japanese captivity whilst being held in a camp at Sandakan in Borneo.  He is buried in Labuan War Cemetery.

He died in the RAF Hospital at Cosford, from injuries sustained whilst flying in Wellington, X, LN159 of No 29 OTU, which crashed on 2 April near Bruntingthorpe after hitting a tree during an air gunnery exercise.  He is buried in Romford Cemetery.
