He was serving at RAF Digby and after drinking in the canteen, he took a revolver of another corporal and stated he was going to shoot a sergeant.  Although the shot missed, the sergeant thought he was going to make another attempt so feinted death but Flanagan turned the gun on himself and committed suicide.  He is buried in Nottingham Northern Cemetery.

He died from injuries sustained whilst flying in Blenheim I, L1168 of No 54 OTU, which dived into the ground at night near Nether Poppleton, on the outskirts of York.  He is buried in Cold Salperton (All Saints) Churchyard.

He was serving with No 37 MU when he died from heart failure, toxaemia, intestinal obstruction and a kinking of the small intestine, his death was registered in Newton.  He is buried in Kilmarnock Cemetery.
