He had been undertaking a cross country navigation exercise from No 2 FTS at Digby to RAF Upper Heyford and back on 22 Sep 1930, when he strayed off course and then suffered engine trouble which resulted in him stalling and diving into the ground at Treeton near Rotherham.  He was severely injured and died three days later.
