RAF Casualties 1920 - K - Z


In the list below some non-commissioned personnel are shown with two ranks, the first is generally that shown in the CWGC Register whilst the one in brackets is that shown on their records or what it should have become on 1 January 1919 when the RAF introduced a new rank/classification structure for non-commissioned personnel.  Where the airman died after 1 Jan 1919 and was still serving, rank shown is that shown on their service records regardless of what is shown on the CWGC register.

A Drill Instructor, he was probably serving with the Port Detachment at Victoria Dock when he reported missing from his home and possibly drowned in the Thames or one of the London docks, he is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton.

He was serving with No 84 Sqn in Iraq and was shot down whilst dropping food in DH9A, F2838 to the stranded vessel 'Greenfly'.  Landing in a river at Samawahon he was seen to wade ashore but was captured and later killed at Dangatora.  He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial.

He had been transferred in Apr 1919 to 'G' Class Reserve having previously served as a Tinsmith and Sheet Metal Worker with Engine Repair Shop.  He died from a fractured skull sustained when he committed suicide by throwing himself from a telegraph pole into the Birmingham Canal at Smethwick and is buried in Middleton Old Cemetery.

He was killed whilst flying Felixstowe F5, N4044, which inexplicably entered a spin at 1,500 ft and he was unable to recover before the boat hit the water and broke up. He was killed in the impact and is buried in Southampton Old Cemetery.

He took off at 11:00 on a test flight with AC2 Braithwaite in DH9A, F1646 of No 24 Sqn from Kenley but at between 200-300 ft the engine stopped and they crashed, the aircraft catching fire.  He his buried in Bandon Hill Cemetery.
