RAF Casualties 1920 - K - Z


The fatal casualties listed below are those shown on the Commonwealth War Graves Register as having died due to World War One, however they can be divided into two distinct groups.

The first group are those who were still on active service at the time of their death and the second those who had been demobilised but whose death was attributed to their war service.

He died from heart failure following bacillary dysentery whilst serving with No 56 Sqn and is burid in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery.

He died in No 35 British Military Hospital, Peshawar from heatstroke whilst serving at HQ No 1 Indian Wing and is commemorated on the Delhi Memorial (India Gate).

He died in a hospital in Sheffield from injuries sustained when a crane over-turned and is buried in Rutherglen Cemetery.

He was reported missing from his home and possibly drowned in the Thames or one of the London docks, he is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton.

He died in the Station Hospital, Lahore from anthrax and is commemorated on the Karachi 1914-1918 War Memorial.

McDONALD, IAN DONALD RAY MC, DFC

He was killed in action whilst serving with No 84 Sqn in Iraq.  He was shot down whilst dropping food in DH9A, F2838 to the the stranded vessel 'Greenfly'.  Landing in a river at Samawahon he was seen to wade ashore but was captured and later killed at Dangatora.  He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial.

He was killed in an aircraft crash between Khartoum and Cairo, probably whilst flying in Handley Page O/400, F302 of No 216 Sqn and is buried in Khartoum War Cemetery.

He was killed whilst flying Felixstowe F5, N4044, which inexplicably entered a spin at 1,500 ft and he was unable to recover before the boat hit the water and broke up. He was killed in the impact and is buried in Southampton Old Cemetery.

He was killed in a motor accident involving a lorry whilst serving at the Aircraft Depot, Egypt and is buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery.

He took off at 11:00 on a test flight with AC Braithwaite in DH9A, F1646 of No 24 Sqn from Kenley but at between 200-300 ft the engine stopped and they crashed, the aircraft catching fire.  He his buried in Bandon Hill Cemetery.
