In the list below some non-commissioned personnel are shown with two ranks, the first is generally that shown in the CWGC Register whilst the one in brackets is that shown on their records or what it should have become on 1 January 1919 when the RAF introduced a new rank/classification structure for non-commissioned personnel.  Where only one rank is shown this appears on both the CWGC register and the service records.

BIRT, ALBERT VICTOR (121597)

He had been drinking at a village inn on 30 March and was found the next day half frozen on the road with severe wounds on the back of his head, punctured lips and a black eye, with his watch and chain missing.  Taken to Stroud Hospital on 1 April, where he later died from his injuries, a verdict of murder by person or persons unknown being passed by the coroner.  Discharged from the RAF in March he had been serving as a Labourer at No 5 (Eastern) Aircraft Repair Depot (Cambridge) and is buried in Sheepscombe (St John) Churchyard Extension.

He was serving as a staff officer at HQ, Middle East and was seriously injured whilst flying in Bristol F2B, C4728 of No 111 Sqn, which side-slipped into a spin from a steep turn at low level following an engine failure.  He died on the way to hospital and was buried with full military honours in Ramleh War Cemetery.
