RAF Casualties 1920 - A - J


In the list below some non-commissioned personnel are shown with two ranks, the first is generally that shown in the CWGC Register whilst the one in brackets is that shown on their records or what it should have become on 1 January 1919 when the RAF introduced a new rank/classification structure for non-commissioned personnel.  Where the airman died after 1 Jan 1919 and was still serving, rank shown is that shown on their service records regardless of what is shown on the CWGC register.

He was serving as an Hospital Orderly with No 238 Sqn, RAF Cattewater when he died suddenly from apoplexy and is buried in Hooe (St John) Churchyard Extension.

A Clerk (Stores), he was serving with No 114 Sqn and died in the Station Hospital at Ambala after being admitted for peritonitis, he is commemorated on the Kirkee 1914-1918 Memorial.

He died at home as the result of heart failure and pulmonary TB, whilst recuperating from an operation the previous year and is buried in Fleet (All Saints) Churchyard.

He had been discharged on 14 Feb 1920 suffering from dementia with paralysis prior to which he had been serving as a Carpenter with No 28 Training Depot Station.  His cause of death is unknown but he is buried in Manchester (Philips Park) Cemetery.

He was killed in a motor accident whilst serving as a Non-Technical Quarter-master with No 8 Wing Mobile Disposal Sqn.  His cause of death is unknown but he is buried in Woolwich Cemetery.

He was serving as a Fitter/Driver (Petrol) at the Electrical and Wireless School, Flowerdown and was considered to have committed suicide by hanging himself, he is buried in Winchester (West Hill) Old Cemetery.

He had been transferred on 5 Apr 1919 to 'G' Class Reserve whilst serving as a Batman with 52 Training Depot Station, Cramlington.  His cause of death is unknown but he is buried in Wandsworth (Earlsfield) Cemetery.

He died in the Military Hospital, Canterbury from pneumonia whilst serving as a Driver (Petrol) with No 2 Section, RAF Depot and is buried in Canterbury Cemetery, Kent.

BASS, GERALD TIPPING (165985)

A Fitter (Aero Engine) he was killed whilst flying a crew member in Felixstowe F5, N4044 of No 230 Sqn, flown by Sqn Ldr E R Moon, inexplicably entered a spin at 1,500 ft and he was unable to recover before the boat hit the water and broke up. He was killed in the impact and is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton.

BASSENGER, HENRY GEORGE (23052)

He had been transferred on 12 Jun 1919 to 'G' Class Reserve prior to which he had been held with 'E' Section, RAF Depot Detachment, Halton following his repatriation as a PoW.  He had been captured on 18 Aug 1917 whilst serving as an Aerial Gunner with No 59 Sqn and his cause of death is unknown but he is buried in Woodgrange Park Cemetery, East Ham.

He was serving as a technical officer with No 274 Sqn when he was admitted to the Norfolk War Hospital, Norwich but was then transferred to the War Hospital in Reading with kidney problems from which he died and is buried in Reading Cemetery.

He had been discharged on 10 Jan 1919 as unfit for further service whilst serving as a Clerk (General) with Central Pay Office, Woking.  His cause of death is unknown but he is buried in Aberdeen (Allenvale) Cemetery.

He had been discharged on 28 Feb 1919 as physically unfit for further service whilst serving as a Aircrafthand with Reserve Depot, Canada.  His cause of death is unknown but he is buried in Vancouver (Mountain View) Cemetery.

He had been discharged on 10 Dec 1918 after relinquishing his commission on ceasing to be employed whilst serving as a Medical Officer with the RAF in the Field.  His cause of death is unknown but he is buried in Heliopolis (Aden) Memorial.

He was flying Bristol Fighter, D7927 of No 70 Sqn with A/Cdre R M Groves, when their aircraft spun in after running out of fuel at Almaza in Egypt.  He is buried in Cairo New British Protestant Cemetery.

He had been transferred on 18 Aug 1919 to 'G' Class Reserve prior to which he had been serving as a Batman with No 5 Sqn.  He died at home from gassing and is buried in Hawkesbury Cemetery, Gloucestershire.

BOCKETT-PUGH, HENRY CHARLES EDWARD DFC

He was serving with No 84 Sqn in Iraq and was shot down whilst dropping food in DH9A, F2838 to the stranded vessel 'Greenfly'.  Landing in a river at Samawahon he was seen to wade ashore but was captured and later killed at Dangatora.  He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial.

He had been discharged on 11 Dec 1918 before being transferred to 'G' Class Reserve on 7 Jan 1919.  Prior to discharge he had been training as a Pilot with No 1 Cadet Wing.  His cause of death is unknown but he is buried in Cullompton Cemetery.

BRAITHWAITE, PERCY (269150)

A Fitter (Aero Engine), he was flying with Fg Off V O Reynolds on a test flight in DH9A, F1646 of No 24 Sqn from Kenley but at between 200-300 ft the engine stopped and they crashed, the aircraft catching fire.  He his buried in Coventry (St Paul's) Cemetery.

He was initially admitted to hospital in 1918 suffering with Pleurisy as a 2 Lt at No 48 Training Depot Station.  He remained in hospital throughout 1919 and was eventually transferred to a hospital in South Africa, where he died from tuberculosis and is buried in Cape Town (Plumstead) Cemetery.

He was killed whilst flying Bristol F2B, F4447 of No 20 Sqn crashed during a bombing raid on Sherrani on the NWF.  He was buried near the crash scene but is now commemorated on the Delhi Memorial (India Gate).

He died from exposure whilst flying Bristol F2B, E2293 of No 14 Sqn which crashed in the Sinai Desert near Nekhl after flying off course and is buried in Suez War Memorial Cemetery.  His records state that his death was accepted for official purposes as having occurred on 21 Jan 1920.
