RAF Casualties 1919 - L


The fatal casualties listed below are those shown on the Commonwealth War Graves Register as having died due to World War One, however they can be divided into two distinct groups.

The first group are those who were still on active service at the time of their death and the second those who had been demobilised but whose death was attributed to their war service.

Group 1 - Died on active service

He died from influenza whilst serving with No 18 Sqn and is buried in Maubeuge-Centre Cemetery.

He died from influenza in the 4th Northern General Hospital, Lincoln whilst serving with No 46 Training Depot Station and is buried in Kingsnorth (St Michael) Churchyard.

He had been invalided out of the service in August and died at home, he is buried in Sunderland (Ryhope Road) Cemetery.

He died in No 36 Casualty Clearing Station from bronchopneumonia whilst serving with No 149 Sqn and is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery.

He died in hospital in Glasgow from pneumonia whilst serving at HQ North-West Area and is buried in Lincoln (Newport) Cemetery.

He was killed whilst flying Short 184, N9090 seaplane which failed to recover from a spin during an ait test whilst serving in North Russia and is buried in Archangel Allied Cemetery.

He is believed to have drowned whislt flying in Airship NS11 of the Airship Experimental Station at Pulham, which canght fire in the air and crashed into the sea, he is buried in Gosport (Ann's Hill) Cemetery.

He died from injuries sustained in a flying accident whilst flying in a Bristol F2B of No 5 Sqn and is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery.

He was killed whilst flying in RE8, B6659 of No 63 Sqn, cause unknown and is buried in  Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery.

He was killed whilst flying Avro 504, B4368 of No 3 Training Depot Station, which crashed from 300 ft on turning downwind following an engine failure and is buried in Andover Cemetery.

He died in the Cottage Hospital, Southport from tuberculosis and peritonitis whilst serving with No 2 Sqn and is buried in Southport (St Cuthbert) Churchyard.

He was killed whilst flying FK8, C8473 of No 18 Training Depot Station, which stalled in a turn and is buried in Ismailia War Memorial Cemetery.

He died from bronchopneumonia whilst serving at the Reinforcement Park and is buried in Longuenesse (St Omer) Souvenir Cemetery.

LYON, LLOYD DIETS ST. A. MM

He is presumed to have drowned when he came down in the sea five miles off Dublin whilst delivering an aircraft fro Shotwick to Ireland and he is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton.
