He was the observer to 2 Lt E Wood in DH4, F5711 of No 55 Sqn on a raid against sidings at Conflans.  They were attacked after dropping their bombs but Wood managed to regain the Allied lines and make a forced landing.  However, Thorp had been injured in the initial attack and died of his wounds later that day.  He is buried in Charmes Military Cemetery, Essegney.
