He was born in Chesterfield and after attending Tapton House School, he worked in the office of Brampton Brewery. He completed 19 operational missions over Europe with No 640 Squadron.
Following retirement he became Fellow Bursar at Wolfson College, Cambridge, and was awarded a Cambridge MA, retiring from Wolfson College in December 1989.
