He was educated at Wath Grammar School and interrupted his studies to become a chartered accountant in July 1941 in order to join the RAF.

On release from the RAF in June 1946 he resumed his studies obtaining his articles as a chartered accountant seven months later, however he then rejoined the RAF and was awarded a permanent commission.

He became one of the first airmen to escape using an ejector seat when his aircraft caught fire over Essex on April 17 1952.

On retiring from the RAF he joined Mercian Builders, Cheltenham as the managing director and when the company was taken over by UBM (United Builders Merchants), he joined the main board and became the managing director of its lead division.
