He was flying with ‘Freddie’ West on 21 April 1918 when they witnessed the shooting down of Manfred von Richthofen.

He commanded the vital Biggin Hill Sector during the Battle of Britain.  On 6 September 1940 a German raid seriously damaged the hangers and considering the remains to be too tempting a target to the Germans whilst still standing, he ordered their destruction with explosives.  For this action he was court martialed but exonerated.
