Citation for the award of the Distinguished Service Cross
"Flt. Lieut. Richard Gregory Gardner, R.N.A.S.
In recognition of the great zeal and gallantry displayed by him on the night of the 15th October, 1917, when a bombing raid . was carried out on Bruges Docks and good results obtained in spite of heavy and accurate anti-aircraft fire. This officer has taken part in thirty-six bombing raids."
