He was serving at RAF Thornaby and died in Hemlington EMS Hospital  from injuries sustained in a road accident whilst hitchhiking home to spend his Christmas leave at home. He was the father of the then two and a half year old Eric Idle , the future Monty Python star.  He is buried in Thornaby-on-Tees Cemetery.
