PACKMAN, STANLEY ARTHUR RAFO

He had been a Major during WW1 and was employed as an instructor with the Newcastle Flying Club at the time of his death.  He was flying a Gull monoplane and came over the airfield at low level.  Attempting to avoid a small building he appears to have stalled and dived into the ground, being thrown from the aircraft and landing on his head, fracturing his skull and was killed.

He was flying as a passenger in Vernon, J7143 of No 45 Sqn when the starboard engine failed on take off at Hinaidi, crashing into No 1 Sqn hanger on the airfield.  He was killed in the crash.  During WW1 he was credited with 13 victories (although Flight in 1926 quoted 32).  He is buried in Ma'asker Al Raschid RAF Cemetery.

He was the ground engineer to the London Aeroplane Club and he was flying with one of the club's instructors S L F St Barbe on a test flight of a DH Moth following maintenance.  The aircraft crashed and he was killed, whilst the pilot was seriously injured.

He died aboard the SS Khiva at Singapore from pneumonia, which he contracted whilst returning from Japan.  He is buried in Kranji Military Cemetery, Singapore.
