RAF Casualties 1919 - W & Y


The fatal casualties listed below are those shown on the Commonwealth War Graves Register as having died due to World War One, however they can be divided into two distinct groups.

The first group are those who were still on active service at the time of their death and the second those who had been demobilised but whose death was attributed to their war service.

Group 1 - Died on active service

He was drowned whilst flying in North Sea Airship No XI, which caught fire and fell into the sea, during a mine sweeper operation, he is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton.

He died from bronchopneumonia whilst serving with No 80 Sqn and is buried in Charleroi Communal Cemetery.

He died in the RAF Central Hospital in Finchley from the effects of wounds he had suffered in 1914 and is buried in Plymouth (Efford) Cemetery.

He was killed in a flying accident when Handley Page 0/400 F3758 of No. 2 School of Navigation and Bomb Dropping crashed into the roof of a building taking off at night from Andover.  He is buried in Leeds (Armley) Cemetery.

He died from wounds sustained on 6 Nov 1918 whilst flying in DH4, D8384 of No 55 Sqn, which failed to return from a bombing raid and is buried in Sarralbe Military Cemetery.

He was serving at No 2 Aicraft Supply Depot (2 Issues Section) and was killed in an accident whilst flying in DH4, D7940, he is buried in Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No 2.

He was killed whilst flying Avro 504, F8736 of No 81 Sqn, which crashed, reason not apparent and is buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery.

He was drowned whilst flying in North Sea Airship No XI, which caught fire and fell into the sea, during a mine sweeper operation, he is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton.

He was killed whilst flying Camel, D1815 of No 29 Training Depot Station, which spun into the ground after stalling at the top of a roll and is buried in Chippenham (or Langley Burrell) (St Paul) Churchyard.

He was serving with No 37 Training Depot Station, when died of pneumonia. He is buried in Wandsworth (Putney Vale) Cemetery and Crematorium.

He was killed whilst flying DH9, F1179 of the Observers School of Reconnaissance and Aerial Photography, which dived into the ground from a turn at 400 ft and burst into flames and is buried in Smethwick (Uplands) Cemetery.

He died from pneumonia whilst serving with No 48 Sqn and is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery.

He died from injuries sustained whilst flying O/400, D4407 of No 216 Sqn.  At the time of his death he flying mail from Marquise, France, to the Army of Occupation in Cologne. He is buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille.
