RAF Casualties 1919 - H


The fatal casualties listed below are those shown on the Commonwealth War Graves Register as having died due to World War One, however they can be divided into two distinct groups.

The first group are those who were still on active service at the time of their death and the second those who had been demobilised but whose death was attributed to their war service.

Group 1 - Died on active service

He was killed whilst flying DH4, F5743 of  No. 1 Communication Sqn, which dived into an orchard due to bad weather during a flight from Hendon to Paris and is buried in Heston (St Leonard) Churchyard.

He died from septic pneumonia following influenza whilst serving in No. 2 Training Wing and is buried in City of London Cemetery and Crematorium, Manor Park.

He was killed whilst flying Snipe, E6157 of No 30 Training Sqn (Northolt), which caught fire in the air.  In protecting his face, he lost control and the aircraft entered a loop from which he was thrown out of, he is buried in Ruislip (St Martin) Churchyard Extension.

HARBORD, LIONEL ANTHONY

He was serving at the Aircraft Park, India when he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head, he is commemorated on the Karachi 1914-1918 War Memorial.

He died of pneumonia in the Officers' Military Hospital in Tidworth and is buried in Manchester Southern Cemetery.  At the time he was serving with No. 2 School of Navigation and Bomb Dropping.

He died from injuries sustained whilst flying DH10, E5446 of No 97 Sqn, which crashed following an engine failure during a climbing turn and is buried in Chislehurst (St Nicholas) Churchyard

He was serving with No 70 Sqn and died in No 64 Casualty Clearing Station from a broken pelvis sustained in an accident, cause unknown, he is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery.

He was killed whilst flying Bristol F2B, 5098 of No 14 Aircraft Acceptance Park, which dived into the ground as it attempted to regain the aerodrome following an engine failure on take off and is buried in Castle Bromwich (SS. Mary and Margaret) Churchyard.
