RAF Casualties 1919 - D


The fatal casualties listed below are those shown on the Commonwealth War Graves Register as having died due to World War One, however they can be divided into two distinct groups.

The first group are those who were still on active service at the time of their death and the second those who had been demobilised but whose death was attributed to their war service.

He was serving with No 74 Sqn and died in No 62 Casualty Clearing Station from influenza and pneumonia, he is buried in Kortrijk (St Jan) Communal Cemetery.

He was reported missing whilst serving in North Russia and is commemorated on the Archangel Memorial.

He was serving at the Central Flying School and died suddenly from a cerebral haemorrhage, he is buried in Upavon Cemetery.

He was killed whilst flying in Vimy, F8622 of No 274 Sqn, which crashed on landing at Rome and burst into flames, he is buried in Rome (Testaccio) Protestant Cemetery.

He was serving with No 8 Tent Detachment and died in No 30 Casualty Clearing Station from acute peritonitis, he is buried in Marcinelle New Communal Cemetery.

He was killed whilst flying a SE5A of No 29 Sqn, which broke up over the airfield at Cologne during a roll at high speed.  He is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery.

He was serving with No 12 Balloon Section and died from pneumonia, he is buried in Longuenesse (St Omer) Souvenir Cemetery.

He was killed whilst flying Camel, B5739 of No 27 Training Depot Station, Crail, which stalled, crashed and burst into flames, he is buried in Crail Parish Churchyard.

He was killed in a flying accident in a Bristol F2B of No 59 Sqn and is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery.

He was serving at No 57 Training Depot Station and died in Paddington Military Hospital from pneumonia, he is buried in Paddington Cemetery.

He failed to return from an operation whilst flying in either Sopwith 1 Strutter, N9055 or N9056 from HMS Vindictive, he is commemorated on the Archangel Memorial.

He was serving at HQ No 16 Group and died from bilary colic, broncho pneumonia and cardia syncope, heis buried in Sheffield (St Michael's) Roman Catholic Cemetery.

He was serving at RAF Leuchars and died from suffercation caused by carbon monoxide fumes from a boiler, he is buried in Comber New Cemetery.

He was reported missing whilst flying a BE2 but was confirmed as being killed nine days later near the Afghan frontier and is commemorated on the Delhi Memorial (India Gate).

He was serving at the Aircraft Repair Depot (Donibristle) but died in Hull from epileptic exhaustion and is buried Basingstoke (South View or Old) Cemetery.
