He was leading a raid against railway targets at Ehrang in DH4, F5725 of No 55 Sqn on 10 November 1918.  After bombing the target, they turned for home and Mackay was hit by a shell splinter, necessitating his observer to take control of the aircraft, which he successfully brought down on the German side of the lines.  They were both made prisoners, but Mackay died of his wounds the following day.  He is buried in  Joeuf Communal Cemetery.

He was the leader of a two formation raid on railways at Metz-Sablon by No 99 Sqn on 26 Sep 1918, flying DH9, B9347.  He was hit in the lungs by an an explosive bullet fired by an enemy fighter and force landed behind enemy lines.  After the Armistice he was moved to 42 Stationary Hospital, Charmes but died of wounds from septic poisoning and was buried in the IAF Cemetery at Charmes.
