He had been serving afloat as Boy Mechanic in the RNAS before transferring to the RAF and was invalided ashore on 10 Apr 1918, reason unknown.  He died, probably as a result of his condition at Withern Camp and is buried in Wolverhampton Borough Cemetery.

He died from injuries sustained the previous day following an accident whilst flying Avro 504, C657 of No 42 Training Sqn, which spun into the ground after stalling in a turn.  He is buried in Wye (SS. Gregory and Martin) Churchyard.
