Excerpt from Aberdeen Press and Journal – 23 Nov 1944

“FG OFF DAVID BURGESS ROSS of 64 Anderson Drive, Aberdeen, received the DFC from the King at a recent investiture at Buckingham Palace.

Nearly eighteen months ago Fg Off Ross was rear gunner of a bomber detailed to attack Essen.  During the flight the plane was hit and severely damaged, the navigator was killed. and the wireless operator wounded.

Besides assisting his captain to fly the damaged plane back to base Fg Off Ross successfully beat off two attacks by Ju 88s during the hazardous journey.  Since then he has taken part in many attacks on Berlin and other towns in Germany.”
