On 7 August 1941 he was flying Spitfire Vb, W3523, of No 611 Squadron (Hornchurch) as part of Circus 67, when it was hit by fire from a Bf 109 over France. However he was able to force-land near Deal but hit a mine, and was badly injured, the aircraft was written off.
Citation for the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross
"Acting Flight Lieutenant George Anthony MASON (132757), Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No. 129 Squadron. This officer is a flight commander of high merit. He has led his flight with skill and vigour and his fine fighting spirit has proved most inspiring. He has destroyed at least 3 and damaged several more enemy aircraft."
