In 1962, he acted as target judge in the first NATO Tactical Weapons contest held at St. Dizier in France.

In early 1965, he was selected to form the first (and only) Belfast squadron in the RAF.  However, before being able to do so he was appointed to the development flying team at Short's in Belfast on 21 Mar 1965.  In May of that year  he undertook the first overseas flight in a Belfast when he flew one to the Mediterranean.  He formed the RAF's operational unit, No 58 Squadron on 1 November 1965 and extensive work up and training flights followed resulting in the squadron being declared fully operational on 1 December 1966.
