On 23 April 1945, he was flying Halifax, JP336 when it was heavily damaged by flak during an attack on a convoy off the Danish coast.  Unable to make land, the aircraft was ditched off the coast, and four members of the crew were able to get into the dinghy, but the other five could not be located.  Although only one nautical mile off the coast the dinghy was blown away from the coast by a westerly wind and it was 36 hours before the three survivors were rescued, one having died from his injuries, and became POWs.
