His father was killed shortly after he was born when the Halifax he was flying into RAF Clifton for disposal crashed as it was coming into land. At Cranwell he attained the rank of Senior Flight Cadet. On No 12 Squadron, he was involved in the trials to introduce the Martel missile into service. He died in Salisbury Hospice
