Tecalemit, 2 wheeled Mobile Servicing Trailer
Crown Copyright© |
|
Manufacturer | Brockhouse |
RAF Ref No | Possibly 16A/1249 |
Purpose | Servicing unit for MT vehicles for washing, lubrication and tyre inflation. |
Description |
Chassis Construction - Rolled steel channel,
electrically welded where necessary. Fitted with rigid
pole-type drawbar accommodating the brake operating gear and towing
eye. On some models the drawbar is fitted with a detachable
castor wheel and a towing handle to enable the trailer to be moved
manually for short distances. Body - Steel framed panelled with sheet metal, four side doors, one hinged at the bottom to form a loading ramp. Adjustable legs at each corner of the body stabilise the trailer when it is in operational use. Equipment: - An air-compressor set comprising a Howard and Dennis, twin cylinder, air cooled compressor, driven by a JAP Model 5 air-cooled petrol engine and an air receiver provided compressed air for tyre inflation and for pressure lubricating. The capacity of the compressor is 6½ cu ft/min at 150 lbs/sq in. Three six gallon oil drums, each fitted with a compressed air operated pump are provided for chassis, engine and gear oil. Delivery pressure of engine and gear oil is 700 lbs/sq in, chassis oil is 4,000 lbs/sq in. A container for penetrating oil is connected direct to and operates at the air receiver pressure. Other containers are provided for special lubricants which are only required in small quantities. A trolley, housed in the forward bay, is equipped with a water pump driven by a second JAP Model 5 engine; this is primarily intended for the washing MT vehicles. The delivery capacity of the pump is 2½ gallons/min at 200 lbs/sq in. The trolley is used in conjunction with a 50 gallon water reservoir constructed of canvas and a collapsible metal frame. Ancillary equipment includes hand-operated oil and grease guns, a gun filler for hub lubricant, lengths of hose fitted with delivery valvesand nozzle and a tyre inflation gun. |

Trailer, 20-ton, 16 wheeled, low loading, SMT
Crown Copyright© |
|
Manufacturer | SMT |
RAF Ref No | Possibly 16A/1147 |
Purpose | Transportation of heavy equipment. |
Chassis Construction | Dropped frame of rolled steel section, gusseted and welded where necessary. The rear ends of the longitudinal members are swept-down to form part of the loading ramps; ramp attachments are provided along the sides for side loading. The platform is of hardwood. Two steel rollers are fitted, one at the front and one at the rear, to guide the winch cable of the towing vehicle. |
Forecarriage and Steering | Front wheels mounted on twin turntables, coupled by tubular rods and hinged yokes to the triangular drawbar assembly. The drawbar is pivoted at the centre and the construction permits Ackermann type steering up to an angle of 45 degrees in unison with drawbar articulation. The drawbar is fitted with a swivel towing eye. Adjustment of the transverse connecting rods is effected by means of adjustable eccentric pins. |
Suspension | Underslung semi-elliptic laminated springs connected by links to double acting trunnion brackets. |
Axles | Two 4½ in diameter oscillating axles in line. |
Brakes | Westinghouse 2-pipe line pressure system operating on all wheels. Should the trailer become detached from the prime-mover, the brakes operate automatically on 'break-away' principle. It is vitally important that no secondary means of towing, such as cable or chain, be connected between the trailer and prime-mover, because if the drawbar attachment should fail, this additional towing device would defeat the object of the 'break-away' safety system. A hand operated parking brake is fitted at the front offside of the trailer, this system is cable operated and interconnected with the main brake linkage. |
Loading gear | Two loading props at the rear end attached by hinge pins to the underside of the chassis frame and held by clip in the stowage position. Four 2-piece ramps each 12 ft long and 1 ft 1 in wide; four ramp pedestals. |
Equipment | Four wheel scotches, two 12 ton hydraulic jacks, timber baulks, one towing hitch (welded to chassis main rear cross member), four heavy duty chains with adjustable turnbuckles, grease gun and spanners. Equipment carrier under chassis frame and toolbox in nearside front corner of platform. |
Wheels/Tyres | 6.00x13, 5-3/8 in off-set 8 stud, four-piece rim/29 x 8 HD |
Dimensions |
Overall - Length (with drawbar) - 29 ft 6½ in,
(without drawbar) - 24 ft 3 in; Width - 9 ft 0¾ in; Height - 5
ft 0 in; Towing eye to front axle - 8 ft 3 in; WB - 16 ft 6½ in; TC
