Cranwell Graduations 1930


The following cadets graduated from the RAF College at Cranwell on 25 July 1930.  The reviewing officer at the graduation parade was Air Vice-Marshal Edgar R Ludlow-Hewitt CB, CMG, DSO, MC.

David Victor ANGELL (26150)

He entered the RAF College in 1928, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Shooting and Squash.  On graduating he was awarded the Abdy Gerrard Fellows Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He was killed in a flying accident on 19 Mar 1931 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was possibly killed whilst flying Siskin IIIA, J9912 of No 29 Sqn, crashed on a farm at Bourn in Cambridgeshire

Douglas Robert Stewart BADER (26151) DSO and Bar, DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1928, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Rugby, Shooting, Hockey, Athletics, Boxing and Cricket.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He retired (invalided) on 30 Apr 1933 in the rank of Fg Off.  He was recalled on 26 Nov 1939, reverting to the Retired List on 21 Jul 1946 as a Gp Capt.

He was involved in a serious flying accident on 14 Dec 1931 when he crashed Bulldog IIA, K1676, of 23 Sqn at Woodley airfield.  As a result he lost both of his legs and was invalided out of the RAF.  Following assessments in October 1939 he was recalled to service.

Cyril Edgar Joseph BAINES (26152) CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1928, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Rugby and Hockey.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He retired on 1 Mar 1958 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the Central Flying School.

John Anthony CHANCE (26153)

He entered the RAF College in 1928 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He was killed in a flying accident on 19 Nov 1930 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying an unidentified Atlas of No 26 Sqn, which crashed at Catterick.  His crewman, Sgt A Mantle was seriously injured.

Patric Bernard COOTE (26155)

He entered the RAF College in 1928, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer, after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.  He also represented the college in Rugby, Hockey Athletics, Squash and Boxing.  On graduating he was awarded the Sword of Honour.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He was killed in action on 13 Apr 1941 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Blenheim I, L4819 of No 211 Sqn, which was shot down by fighters during a raid on Florina.  He is buried in Phaleron War Cemetery.

Robert Bruce DASHPER (26156)

He entered the RAF College in 1928, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Shooting.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He died in service on 6 May 1946 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He died in the Royal Hospital at Richmond in Surrey

Morgan Brownson EDWARDS (26157) OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1928 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He retired on 15 Dec 1956 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Dennis Brian Douglas FIELD (26158)

He entered the RAF College in 1928, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Athletics, Tennis, Cricket and Hockey.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He was killed in action on 6 Jun 1940 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Hampden I, P1348 of No 83 Sqn, which was shot down by flak on the west bank of the Elbe on a raid to Hamburg.  He is buried in Becklingen War Cemetery.

John Peter MASSEY (26160)

He entered the RAF College in 1928 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He resigned his permanent commission on 19 Oct 1933 in the rank of Plt Off.  However he re enlisted in the RAFVR on 11 Nov 1939, until leaving on 17 Feb 1946 in the rank of ?.

 

James Winter Carmichael MORE (26161) OBE, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1928, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Squash, Hockey, Athletics, Tennis and Cross Country.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He died in service on 12 Sep 1944 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was serving as SASO at No 224 Group and was captured in January 1943 whilst flying Hurricane of No ? Sqn, on a ground strafing mission, being compelled to make a forced landing as a result of damage inflicted by AA fire. He was killed when the Rakuyo Maru, on which he was being transported, was sunk by an Allied submarine.  He is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial.

Sir Thomas Ulric Curzon SHIRLEY (26164) KBE, CB, DL, CEng, FIEE, FRAeS

He entered the RAF College in 1928, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  On graduating he was awarded the Humanistics Prize and the Hyde Thompson Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He retired on 9 Aug 1966 in the rank of AVM.

He transferred to the Technical Branch.  He was a graduate of the Imperial Defence College, the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.

Nigel Charles WALKER (26167)

He entered the RAF College in 1928, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Rugby, Hockey and Athletics.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He retired on 12 Sep 1959 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

William Robert WILLS-SANDFORD (26169)

He entered the RAF College in 1928 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He retired on 3 Feb 1956 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He flew autogiros and became a leading pilot and later something of an autogiro historian. He test flew Spitfires before the war and spent a short time in France in 1940 (WIS South). He was posted to Singapore and became a Japanese PoW, spending most of his captivity in Palembang in Sumatra but was transferred to Changi in March 1945, as the Japanese wanted all senior officers there - to be executed if the Americans invaded Japan. He reached Liverpool in October 1945 and was later CO of RAF Swinderby. His last posting was to RAF St Athan where he was CO of a Maintenance Unit. He played golf for the RAF

Lawrence George BELCHAM (26172)

He entered the RAF College in 1928 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Jan 1931.  He was killed in action on 14 Jul 1942 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Catalina I, AH545 of No 119 Sqn, which was lost on a ferry flight.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Cyril James GILES (26221) OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1928, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Soccer.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He retired on 23 Jun 1960 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

Patrick Alexander George LEARMOND (33490)

He entered the RAF College in 1928 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 7 Nov 1939.  He was killed in action on 23 May 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Spitfire I, P9370 of No 92 Sqn, which was shot down over Dunkirk by a Bf 109.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Albert Gwillim CLELAND (26154)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Soccer, Athletics and Cross-Country.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He was killed in a flying accident on 22 Dec 1932 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying a Fairey IIIF of No 47 Sqn which crashed during a co-operation exercise with the Eastern Arab Corps at Gedaref in the Sudan.

Charles Eric LITTLER (26159)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Boxing.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He died in service on 30 Mar 1941 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He died from injuries sustained whilst flying Wellington IC, R1043 of No 103 Sqn, which crashed and burst into flames whilst attempting an emergency landing near Yeovil on return from a raid on Brest.  He was cremated at Liverpool (Anfield) Crematorium

Jack Stewart NEWCOMBE (26162)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Swimming.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He died in service on 26 Feb 1931 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was serving with No 12 Sqn but died at Kreisspital Samaden in Switzerland

Sir Walter Philip George PRETTY (26163) KBE, CB

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Cricket and Fencing.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He retired on 3 Oct 1966 in the rank of AM.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College.

Geoffrey Dalton STEPHENSON (26165) CBE, ADC

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Boxing, Athletics, Cross Country and Swimming.  On graduating he was awarded the R M Groves Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He was killed in a flying accident on 8 Nov 1954 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was killed whilst test flying a F-100A of the USAF at Eglin Air Force Base.  The aircraft went out of control and crashed before he could eject.

Denis George VAUGHAN-FOWLER (26166)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Shooting, Athletics and Tennis.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He was killed in a flying accident on 7 Aug 1931 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying Siskin IIIA, J9905 of No 41 Sqn.  He had been flying at the Folkestone Searchlight Tattoo, in an aircraft lit up with coloured light and on his return to Hawkinge, it developed engine trouble and overturned on landing, bursting into flames and burning out.

John WHITEHEAD (26168)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt, after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He retired on 17 Jan 1958 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.

Henry Bertram WRIGLEY (26170) CB, CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Soccer.  On graduating he was awarded the.

He was commissioned on 26 Jul 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1930.  He retired on 11 Jul 1964 in the rank of AVM.

He transferred to the Technical Branch.  He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.

Maurice William L'Isle La Vallette BAKER (26171)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Soccer, Boxing and Hockey.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Jan 1931.  He was killed in action on 21 Feb 1945 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Stirling IV, LJ894 of No 196 Sqn, which crashed near De Rips in Holland during a raid to Rees.  He is buried in Mierlo War Cemetery.

Hubert Thomas BENNETT (26173)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Jan 1931.  He retired on 23 Jun 1961 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Harold Peter BROAD (26174) CBE, DFC

John Patrick CECIL-WRIGHT (26176)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  On graduating he was awarded the R M Groves Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Jan 1931.  He retired on 28 Jan 1951 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Sir Thomas Norman COSLETT (26178) KCB, OBE, CEng, FIMechE

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Boxing and Rugby.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Jan 1931.  He retired on 1 Jul 1963 in the rank of AM.

He was a graduate of the Imperial Defence College and the RAF Staff College.

William Francis Cripps HOBSON (26180)

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Jan 1931.  He retired on 23 May 1956 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Henry Algernon Vickers HOGAN (26181) CB, DFC

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Jan 1931.  He retired on 29 Apr 1962 in the rank of AVM.

 

Thomas Quintus HORNER (26182)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Soccer and Boxing.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Jan 1931.  He retired on 25 Apr 1958 retaining the rank of Gp Capt.

 

John Charles MACDONALD (26183) CB, CBE, DFC and Bar, AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1929 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Jan 1931.  He retired on 25 Dec 1964 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

George Richard MOORBY (26184)

He entered the RAF College in 1929 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Jan 1931.  He resigned his permanent commission on 19 Jun 1934 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.

Norman Eric MORRISON (26186) AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Tennis, Rugby and Cricket.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Jan 1931.  He retired on 2 Oct 1957 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

William Trefor Hugh NICHOLS (26194) OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn.  On graduating he was awarded the John Anthony Chance Memorial Prize and the Hyde Thompson Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Feb 1931.  He retired on 6 Apr 1965 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He transferred to the Technical Branch.  He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Fergus Alexander PEARCE (26187) CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Soccer, Cricket, Fencing, Squash and Swimming.  On graduating he was awarded the Humanistics Prize.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Jan 1931.  He retired on 19 May 1958 in the rank of A/Cdre.

 

William Stanley REED (26188)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Fencing, Rugby and Boxing.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Jan 1931.  He retired on 17 Aug 1959 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Maurice Wilbraham Sandford ROBINSON (26189) CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Shooting and Rugby.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Jan 1931.  He retired on 1 Mar 1958 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.

John Sydenham SABINE (26190) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Fencing, Cross Country and Shooting.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Jan 1931.  He was killed on active service on 24 Aug 1943 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Wellington II, Z8425 of the BARU, which collided with Wellington, W5430 on the approach to Cairo West.  He is buried in Heliopolis War Cemetery.

Roger Furnell SMITH (26191)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Boxing.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Jan 1931.  He resigned his permanent commission on 5 Jan 1951 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He had his seniority reduced to 8  Nov 1950

Rodney Levett WILKINSON (26192)

He entered the RAF College in 1929 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Jan 1931.  He was killed in action on 16 Aug 1940 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was the OC of No 266 Sqn and was killed whilst flying Spitfire I, R6768 of No 266 Sqn, which was shot down by a Bf 109.  He is buried in Margate Cemetery, Kent.

Charles Mervyn WINDSOR (26193)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Soccer, Rugby, Athletics and Cross Country.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Jan 1931.  He was killed in action on 8 Dec 1941 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Beaufighter II, R2398 'A' of No 255 Sqn, which crashed as it landed on its return from a patrol.  He is buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery.
