Cranwell Graduations 1929

The following cadets graduated from the RAF College at Cranwell on 26 July 1929. The reviewing officer at the graduation parade was Air Vice-Marshal Sir Edward Ellington KCB, CMG, CBE.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 2 Aug 1957 in the rank of A/Cdre.	He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.
Wilfred Ivanhoe Harris BURKE (26100)	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl. He also represented the college in Fencing.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He was killed in action on 8 Jun 1940 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.	He was killed whilst flying in Blenheim IV, R3746 of No 15 Sqn, which crashed at Guerville on a raid to Poix. He is buried in Guerville Communal Cemetery.
Francis Charles COLE (26101)	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl. He also represented the college in Rugby. On graduating he was awarded the R M Groves Memorial Prize.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He was killed in action on 8 Apr 1941 in the rank of Wg Cdr.	He was killed whilst flying in Whitley V, Z6468 of No 102 Sqn, which failed to return from a raid on Kiel. He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
Edward John CORBALLY (26102) CBE	He entered the RAF College in 1927 and was a member of A Sqn.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 29 Apr 1959 in the rank of AVM.	He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.
Leslie CROCKER (26103) CBE, AFRAeS	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of A Sqn. He also represented the college in Fencing, after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 1 Apr 1960 in the rank of Gp Capt.	He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.
Lord Malcolm Avendale DOUGLAS-HAMILTON (26104) OBE, DFC, AFC	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt. He also represented the college in Rugby, Rowing, Fencing and Boxing.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 20 Apr 1932 in the rank of Fg Off.	He joined the AuxAF on xxx xxxx and was mobilised on 2 Sep 1939. He left the service on 29 Nov 1946 and died in a flying accident in the Cameroons in 1964
Dennis John DOUTHWAITE (26105)	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer. He also represented the college in Cricket and Fencing.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He was killed in a flying accident on 1 May 1934 in the rank of Fg Off.	He was killed whilst flying in Hart, K3152 of the RAF College, Cranwell when it collided with Bristol Bulldog Trainer, K3928.
Frederick Robert DREW (26106) CBE	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of A Sqn. He also represented the college in Fencing and Shooting.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 1 Jun 1957 in the rank of Gp Capt.	He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.
Geoffrey Kinglake FAIRTLOUGH (26107)	He entered the RAF College in 1927 and was a member of B Sqn.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 30 Jan 1950 in the rank of Gp Capt.
Sir Maurice Lionel HEATH (26108) KBE, CB	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of A Sqn. He also represented the college in Fencing.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 17 Jul 1965 in the rank of AM.	He was a graduate of the Imperial Defence College and the RAF Staff College.
William Sacheverell HEBDEN (26109)	He entered the RAF College in 1927 and was a member of B Sqn.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 3 Oct 1958 in the rank of A/Cdre.	He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.
Hilary Richard Lionel HOOD (26110) DFC	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of B Sqn. He also represented the college in Rugby and Hockey.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He was killed in action on 5 Sep 1940 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.	He was killed whilst flying Spitfire I, P9428 of No 41 Sqn, which crashed after colliding with R6635 of the same unit during combat. He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
Richard Cosby KEARY (26111)	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl. He also represented the college in Hockey and Cricket.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 11 Nov 1964 in the rank of Gp Capt.	He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.
David William LANE (26112) CBE	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton. He also represented the college in Soccer.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 24 May 1958 in the rank of A/Cdre.	He was a graduate of the Imperial Defence College and the RAF Staff College.
Kenneth Purdon LEWIS (26113)	He entered the RAF College in 1927 and was a member of A Sqn, after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 18 Mar 1958 in the rank of Gp Capt.	He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.
Lawrence Errington Jeff LUCAS (26114)	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl. He also represented the college in Shooting.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He was killed in a flying accident on 10 Sep 1929 in the rank of Plt Off.	He was killed in flying accident at Upavon, whilst flying an unidentified Siskin IIIA of No 17 Sqn and is buried in Upavon Church Cemetery.
Roger Clutton MEAD (26115) CBE, DFC, AFC, ADC	He entered the RAF College in 1927 and was a member of B Sqn.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 20 Apr 1958 in the rank of A/Cdre.	He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.
Anthony Oliver MOLESWORTH (26116)	He entered the RAF College in 1927 and was a member of B Sqn.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He was killed on active service on 15 Aug 1944 in the rank of Gp Capt.	He was probably killed whilst flying in Oxford I, L4635 of the Metropolitan Communication Sqn, which crashed on the approach to Newmarket after catching fire in the air. He is buried in Cambridge City Cemetery.
Sydney Stuart MURRAY (26117) OBE	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt. He also represented the college in Cricket, Athletics, Rugby and Shooting.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 9 Apr 1957 in the rank of Gp Capt.	He was a graduate of the Central Flying School.
Ian Balmford NEWBIGGING (26118) DFC	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of B Sqn. He also represented the college in Boxing and Athletics.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 1 Aug 1957 in the rank of Gp Capt.	He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.
Kenneth William NIBLETT (26119) DFC	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer. He also represented the college in Athletics and Soccer. On graduating he was awarded the Sword of Honour.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 4 Apr 1960 in the rank of Gp Capt.
Ronald Lancelot PHILLIPS (26120) CBE	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of B Sqn after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Flowerdown. He also represented the college in Hockey and Tennis. On graduating he was awarded the Abdy Gerrard Fellows Memorial Prize.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He died in service on 22 Nov 1956 in the rank of A/Cdre.
Francis Andrew Joseph POLLOCK-GORE (26121)	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of B Sqn. He also represented the college in Athletics.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 31 Aug 1955 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.
John Alexander POWELL (26122) DSO, OBE	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl. He also represented the college in Fencing and Shooting.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He was reported missing in action on 18 Aug 1944 in the rank of Gp Capt.	He was killed whilst flying in Beaufighter VIF, X7891 of No 19 (SAAF) Sqn, which was shot down by ground fire during an attack on an enemy airfield in Yugoslavia. He is buried in Belgrade War Cemetery.
Sir Anthony Dunkerton SELWAY (26123) KCB, DFC	He entered the RAF College in 1927 and was a member of A Sqn.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 20 Feb 1965 in the rank of AM.	He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the Central Flying School.
Eric Rolfe SIMONDS (26124)	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl. He also represented the college in Fencing, Shooting and Athletics.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He died in service on 22 Jul 1937 in the rank of Flt Lt.	He was drowned as the result of a flying accident off Felixstowe whilst flying Magister, L5912 of the A & AEE, his body being washed ashore on 1 Aug 1937.
William Vernon Lewis SPENDLOVE (26125) DSO	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt. He also represented the college in Cricket, Athletics and Hockey.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He was reported missing in action on 22 Jun 1943 in the rank of Gp Capt.	He was killed whilst flying in Ventura I, AE910 'Y' of No 21 Sqn, which was shot down by flak near Abbeville. He is buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension.
Frank William STANNARD (26126)	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of A Sqn. He also represented the college in Athletics.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 25 May 1988 in the rank of Gp Capt.	He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.
Roland Eugene de Trevieres VINTRAS (26127) CBE	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of A Sqn. He also represented the college in Fencing and Athletics. On graduating he was awarded the Humanistics Prize.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 1 Aug 1949 in the rank of A/Cdre.	He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.
Charles Alpine WATT (26128)	He entered the RAF College in 1927, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl. He also represented the college in Cricket.	He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Aug 1929. He retired on 5 Feb 1958 in the rank of Gp Capt.	He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 17 Jan 1930. He retired on 6 Jun 1966 in the rank of ACM.	He was a graduate of the Imperial Defence College and the RAF Staff College.
George Reginald Alexander ELSMIE (26133) DFC	He entered the RAF College in 1928, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer. He also represented the college in Athletics, Rugby, Hockey, Squash, Tennis and Cross Country. On graduating he was awarded the Sword of Honour, R M Groves Memorial Prize and the Abdy Gerrard Fellows Memorial Prize.	He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 17 Jan 1930. He was killed in action on 18 Apr 1941 in the rank of Wg Cdr.	He was killed whilst flying in Blenheim IV, R3837 RT-T of No 114 Sqn, which was shot down by Bf 110s during a attack on an enemy convoy. He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
Blair Alexander FRASER (26134)	He entered the RAF College in 1928, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.	He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 17 Jan 1930. He retired on 7 Dec 1956 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 17 Jan 1930. He was killed on active service on 3 Jul 1943 in the rank of Wg Cdr.	He was killed whilst flying in Fokker F.XXII, HM159 (ex. G-AFXR) of No 1680 Flt, which crashed into Loch Tarbert after catching fire in the air. He is buried in Campeltown (Kilkerran) Cemetery.
Sir Wallace Hart KYLE (26141) GCB, CBE, DSO, DFC	He entered the RAF College in 1928, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl. He also represented the college in Cricket, Squash and Tennis.	He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 17 Jan 1930. He retired on 9 Nov 1968 in the rank of ACM.	He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.
Edgar Francis John L'ESTRANGE (26142)	He entered the RAF College in 1928, was a member of B Sqn. He also represented the college in Rowing. He was reported missing in action on 30 Aug 1944 in the rank of Gp Capt.	He was killed whilst flying in Lancaster III, JB593 ZN-T of No 106 Sqn, which was lost without a trace on a raid to Konigsberg. He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 17 Jan 1930. He was killed in a flying accident on 6 Aug 1930 in the rank of Plt Off.
Arthur George TEIDEMAN (26146)	He entered the RAF College in 1928, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl. He also represented the college in Soccer and Athletics.	He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 17 Jan 1930. He was killed in a flying accident on 28 Nov 1931 in the rank of Fg Off.
Richard Lindsay WALLACE (26147) CBE, AFC	He entered the RAF College in 1928, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt. He also represented the college in Rugby, Hockey and Athletics. On graduating he was awarded the Humanistics Prize.	He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 17 Jan 1930. He retired on 28 Apr 1953 in the rank of Gp Capt.	He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1929 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 17 Jan 1930. He retired on 4 Nov 1958 in the rank of Gp Capt.	He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.
Rodney Thomas Playford CLARKSON (26149)	He entered the RAF College in 1928, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.	He was commissioned on 11 Mar 1930 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 8 Apr 1930. He died in service on 9 Feb 1934 in the rank of Fg Off.	He died in the Royal Naval Hospital at Hasler from injuries sustained when the car in which he was travelling crashed into a tree near Gosport.
