Citation for the award of the Air Force Cross
"GRENFELL, Eric Blake, F/L
Flight Lieutenant Grenfell has displayed conspicuous skill and intrepidity as pilot during his services in No.47 Squadron. On April 15th whilst piloting an aeroplane during manoeuvres with military troops a tray of smoke bombs under the fuselage ignited and set fire to the machine. Flight Lieutenant Grenfell acted with great coolness and skill in this emergency. He took his coat off when it was on fire, side slipped down in order to avoid being overcome by smoke and eventually made a successful landing in difficult country whilst practically standing on the pilot’s seat."
