Educated at Kelvinside Academy and Glasgow University, he was originally a member of the 7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.  He gained RAeC Certificate No 1779 on 22 September 1915.  After retiring from the RAF he was seconded to the Department of Civil Aviation and attached to the GPO as an Air Mail Adviser.  He was recalled to service from 26 August 1939 to 5 October 1944.
