Educated at Highgate School, he entered the RAF College, Cranwell in 1951, graduating in 1953.  With No 109 Squadron he operated in the low-level marking role and during his time with No 76, the squadron, equipped with Canberra B6's, was tasked with atomic cloud sampling in Australia and Christmas Island in the Pacific, in which he was involved.

On retirement from the RAF he was appointed Gentleman Usher to the Queen and became Vice-Chairman of the National Council of Territorial, Auxiliary and Volunteer Reserve Associations.  He also continued flying as a pilot with No 6 AEF at Benson until 1997, although he continued to run a navigation course at the unit for cadets.   The same year he was appointed the first Honorary Air Commodore of No 606 (Chiltern) Squadron RAuxAF.
