Whilst test flying the Javelin, he found himself entering a flat spin at 40,000ft and although attempting to recover he was forced to eject at 8,000ft.  However, he continued to record his actions during his recovery attempt which was able to shed new light on the problem and was awarded the AFC as a result.  Following retirement from the RAF he became Secretary of the British Association of Occupational Therapists.  He was President of the No 30 Squadron Association in 1996.
