No 2743 Squadron, RAF Regiment - Gallery

The photographs were taken by Squadron Leader John Bates (118216), who enlisted as a Ground Gunner in 1940, transferring to the RAF Regiment on its formation in 1942, which he left with the rank of Squadron Leader in the early 1950's.  During WW2 he served in Ceylon and Burma, and was an instructor at the Battlefield School in Ceylon. He also served at the Battle of Kohima in Nagaland, NE India; and in actions defending the aerodrome at Dimapur (Also in Nagaland, NE India).  When the war ended, he was stationed in Honk Kong and also the Cocos-Keeling Islands.  Most of the photos are uncaptioned.

The photographs on this page have been provided by Patricia Cairns (neé Bates), the daughter of Squadron Leader Bates, via the Wynyard RSL in Tasmania.
