She was born at Wortley near Leeds and was educated at Sheffield High School. She joined the Women's Auxiliary Air Force in 1941, being commissioned in 1944 and remained in the WAAF after the war. When the WRAF was formed to replace the WAAF in 1949, she transferred to the new organisation. When she was promoted to Air Commodore, she was the first woman in the RAF Supply Branch to have achieved that rank. After retiring she chaired the Girls Venture Corps, held posts with the Union Jack Club and the RAF Benevolent Fund as well as helping to raise funds for the Battle of Britain Museum at the RAF Museum, Hendon.
